Crítica: The Descent – The Coven of Rats (2016)

Los últimos meses del año 2006, en Bilbao, varios músicos de diferentes bandas locales, deciden dar forma a un nuevo ente de Thrash/Death Melódico, con las esencia de la escena de Goteborg (Suecia), aquellas bandas como: At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, The Haunted, Dimension Zero, etc.

En 2012, junto al sello THEROCKSTUDIOS, graban su primera placa llamada Dimensional Matters, con el productor Carlos Creator. Este trabajo recibió buenas críticas dentro y fuera del país. También los llevó a girar por España presentando su obra.

La banda desde sus inicios ha sufrido cambios, la alineación actual son: Charlie, en las voces; Ander y Borja “Taj”, en las guitarras; Iñigo, en el bajo, y Txamo, en la batería. Esta formación participó en la Final del W.O.A. edición española. Imponentes.

Mientras giraban por el país presentando su primera obra, les dio tiempo a preparar su siguiente trabajo, el mismo que nos tiene aquí. El 15 de Noviembre de 2016, de la mano de Suspiria Records, la dirección de Pedro R. Monge (Vhaldemar), es liberado The Coven Of Rats.

El disco está contenido en 62 minutos, con 12 cortes, de los cuales Alpha y Omega, (intro y outro), dos bellas melodías tristes y sobrecogedoras, del músico Joän Hayden, amigo de la banda.

Todos los cortes, destilan brillantez, poder compositivo, y una madurez musical impresionante. Por lo que pienso que Alpha y Omega encajan y adornan la obra de forma magistral.

Los temas basados en el Death Melódico a velocidad Thrash, tienen una ingeniería y precisión de la talla de sus influencias, que lo podría haber firmado cualquiera de ellos. Los juegos de los riffs sencillos, pero demoledores no te dejan tiempo para aburrimiento. Las cuerdas vocales de Carlos, han logrado desarrollar una variedad de registros, con lo mejor del género entre ellos, el desgarrador y agónico registro de Tompa Lindberg. Los Blast Beats de Txamo son precisos y limpios, sin ser saturado por florituras innecesarias. Las líneas de bajo van logrando la profundidad del Groove de su gran sonido. Los solos de guitarras trabajan bien las armonías de las escalas, lo que termina de dejarnos un trabajo impecable. Dentro del género lo mejor que he escuchado en mucho tiempo.

Difícil poner un tema como mejor que otro, aunque el grito del inicio de The Coven Of The Rats, logra ponerlo por encima del resto, o el juego de contratiempos y cambios de velocidad en Seeds Of The Monolith, luego The Warrior Within, Falling Grace, New Millenium Spawn, Death City Gospel, Overcome y Seeds Of Madness.

Agradecer el no caer en modas de usar voces limpias innecesarias, que en el mayor de los casos se han vuelto lapidarias. Un inmenso trabajo, excelente para los nostálgicos del mejor sonido Goteborg. Recomendado. Sonidos dinámicos.

The last months of 2006, in Bilbao, several musicians from different local bands decided to form a new Thrash / Melodic Death entity, with the essence of the Goteborg scene (Sweden), bands like: At The Gates, Dark Tranquility, The Haunted, Dimension Zero, etc.

In 2012 , with the label THEROCKSTUDIOS, they record their first plate called Dimensional Matters, with the producer Carlos Creator. This work received good critics inside and outside the country. It also took them to tour around Spain presenting his work.

The band from its beginnings has suffered changes, the current alignment are: Charlie, in the voices; Ander and Borja "Taj", on guitars; Iñigo, on the bass, and Txamo, on the drums. This band participated in the Final of the Spanish edition W.O.A.. Impressive.

While touring the country presenting their first work, it gave them time to prepare their next job, the same one that has us here. On November 15, 2016, by the hand of Suspiria Records, the direction of Pedro R. Monge (Vhaldemar), is released The Coven Of Rats.

The disc is contained in 62 minutes, with 12 cuts, of which Alpha and Omega (intro and outro), two beautiful melodic sad songs, of the musician Joän Hayden, friend of the band.

All cuts, distill brilliance, compositional power, and an impressive musical maturity. So I think Alpha and Omega fit and adorn the work masterfully.

The themes based on Melodic Death at Thrash speed, have an engineering and precision of the size of its influences, that could have been signed by any of them. The games of simple but devastating riffs do not leave you time for boredom. Carlos’s vocal cords have managed to develop a variety of records, with the best of the genre among them, the heartbreaking and agonizing record of Tompa Lindberg. The Blast Beats of Txamo are precise and clean, without being saturated by unnecessary flourishes. The bass lines are getting the groove’s depth out of its great sound. The guitars solos work well the harmonies of the scales, which finishes to leave us an impeccable work. Within the genre the best I’ve heard in a long time.

Hard to put a track as better than another, even if the cry of the beginning of The Coven Of Rats, manages to put it above the rest, or the game of mishaps and changes of speed in Seeds Of The Monolith, then The Warrior Within, Falling Grace , New Millenium Spawn, Death City Gospel, Overcome and Seeds Of Madness.

Thank you for not falling into fashions of using unnecessary clean voices, which in the majority of cases have become lapidary. An immense work, excellent for the nostalgic of the best sound Goteborg. Recommended. Dinamic sounds.
