Thera Roya es un trío de Brooklyn que comenzó su andadura en el año 2011, incialmente haciéndose llamar The Badela Ladies, formado por el batería/vocalista Ryan Smith y el bajista Jonny Cohn. Al año siguiente el lineup se completó con el guitarrista Chris Eustaquio y en el año 2013 lanzaron un EP debut. Más adelante lanzaron dos splits, con las bandas Hercyn y Sentry respectivamente, además sacaron un single y en el año 2015 vió la luz su segundo EP “Unraveling”.

La música de Thera Roya se podría calificar como Sludge/Doom, pero también nos topamos con dosis de cierta psicodelia.
El concepto de “Unraveling” gira en torno a las experiencias sufridas durante los episodios de un ataque de pánico y a través de tres canciones nuestro cerebro experimenta multitud de sensaciones, debido en gran parte a las diferentes atmósferas que logran crear. El sonido que aquí nos encontramos es denso, pesado y muy grave, a excepción de los primeros minutos de la última canción “Unravelling”, los cuales rozan el Grunge.
La voz de Ryan Smith pasa por diferentes rangos a lo largo de los casi treinta minutos que dura el EP, sus registros van desde lo más oscuro y tenebroso hasta alcanzar unos gritos realmente desesperados, aunque en general la lírica es mínima, componiéndose principalmente de desgarradores gritos. La sección rítmica es aplastante y compleja, sobre todo en la segunda canción “Body Breaker”, ayudando a crear esa sensación de caos imprescindible para recrear el concepto del cual se nutre “Unraveling”.
Thera Roya es toda una experiencia para los sentidos y este EP es un gran ejemplo de ello. Si eres fan de ISIS o Neurosis, yo de ti no me lo perdería porque te va a encantar.

Thera Roya is a trio of Brooklyn that began in the year 2011, initially calling themselves The Badela Ladies, formed by drums/vocalist Ryan Smith and bassist Jonny Cohn. The following year, the lineup was completed by guitarist Chris Eustace and in 2013, they released an EP debut. They later released two splits, with the bands Hercyn and Sentry respectively, also took a single and released their second EP "Unraveling" in the year 2015.
Thera Roya‘s music could qualify as Sludge/Doom, but we also stumbled upon some psychedelia dose.
The concept of "Unraveling" revolves around the experiences suffered during the episodes of a panic attack and through three songs our brain experience a multitude of sensations, due in large part to different atmospheres that create. The sound here is dense, heavy, and very low, with the exception of the first minutes of the last song "Unravelling", which border on the Grunge.
The voice of Ryan Smith goes through different ranges, their records are from the dark and gloomy until reaching a few screams really desperate, although in general the lyric is minimal, composing is mainly of piercing screams. The rhythm section is overwhelming and complex, especially in the second song "Body Breaker", helping to create that sense of chaos necessary to recreate the concept which draws "Unraveling".
Thera Roya is an experience for the senses, and this EP is a great example of this. If you’re a fan of ISIS or Neurosis, I wouldn’t miss it for anything because you’ll love.
