Crítica: Gloomy Grim – The Age Of Aquarius (2016)

Gloomy Grim es una banda finlandesa de Symphonic Black Metal nacida en el año 1995. Después de 8 años desde su quinto y hasta ahora el que era último álbum de estudio, el 6 de Junio de este año, lanzaron su sexto larga duración titulado “The Age Of Aquarius”.

Tras pasar tanto tiempo entre un disco y otro, personalmente, siempre espero que los resultados de dicha espera valgan la pena y lo que la banda tenga que ofrecer, esté por encima de la media. Gloomy Grim lo han conseguido con creces. “The Age Of Aquarius” es posiblemente su disco más directo, agresivo y menos sinfónico de todos. En esta ocasión, el omnipresente teclado de los discos anteriores ha quedado relegado a un segundo plano y lo cierto es que el cambio le ha sentado muy bien, dando paso a una contundencia y a una fuerza extra a lo largo de todo el álbum. Aunque esto no significa que los momentos más melódicos o sinfónicos hayan desaparecido, sino que esas partes siguen ahí, pero más dosificadas y en consecuencia, logrando una mayor versatilidad en las composiciones. Variabilidad lograda también en parte, gracias a la cambiante sección rítmica, donde encontramos desde mid-tempos, up-tempos hasta, incluso, un punto de progresivo, como veremos a continuación.

Es difícil quedarse con unas pocas canciones, a la hora de valorar las mejores, pero lo que está claro es que en un disco tan rico musicalmente como este, podéis encontrar todos los elementos que lo componen en las siguientes cuatro canciones: “Germination”, “Beyond The Hate”, “The Shameful Kiss” y “Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me”.

“Germination” es la canción más rápida del álbum, sin adornos, directa al grano y muy agresiva. Contiene toda la esencia del Black Metal más tradicional.

En “Beyond The Hate” encontraremos el punto más melódico, donde el teclado vuelve a recobrar el protagonismo de anteriores trabajos e incluso está acompañado de momentos acústicos donde la atmósfera óscura reina a través de todo el tema.

“The Shameful Kiss” contiene ese punto progresivo del que hablaba anteriormente, debido a sus cambios tanto armónicos como rítmicos.

“Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me” es el track más sinfónico del álbum. Las orquestaciones son el aliciente que dota al tema de una majestuosidad mayúscula.

En conclusión, Gloomy Grim han vuelto por todo lo alto y no dejarán indiferente a ningún seguidor de la banda ni a ningún fan del Black Metal. Un disco imprescindible en lo que llevamos de año.

Gloomy Grim is a Symphonic Black Metal band from Finland, born in the year 1995. After 8 years since his fifth and so far which was the last Studio album, on June 6 of this year, they released their sixth full length entitled "The Age Of Aquarius".

After pass both time between a disc and another, personally, always hope that the results of such expected worth the wait and what the band have that offer, is above the average. Gloomy Grim it have gotten with grow. "The Age Of Aquarius" is possibly their album more direct, aggressive and less symphonic of all. On this occasion, the omnipresent keyboard of the previous albums has been relegated to the background and the truth is that the change has gone very well, yielding a forcefulness and an extra force throughout full album. Although this does not mean that the more melodic or symphonic moments be gone, but those parts are still there, but dosed and thus achieving greater versatility in the compositions. Variability also achieved in part thanks to the changed rhythm section, where we found from mid-tempos, up-tempos, even, a progressive point, as we will see below.

It is difficult to stay with a few songs, when assessing the best, but what is clear is that in an album so rich musically like this, you can find all the elements that compose it in the following four songs: "Germination", "Beyond The Hate", "The Shameful Kiss" and "Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me".

"Germination" is the faster song from the album, unadorned, direct to the point and very aggressive. It contains the essence of the more traditional Black Metal.

In "Beyond The Hate" you will find the most melodic point, where the keyboard returns to regain the prominence of previous work and is even accompanied by acoustic moments where the dark atmosphere reigns across all song.

"The Shameful Kiss" contains that progressive point I talked about previously, due to their both harmonic and rhythmic changes.

"Light Of Lucifer Shine On Me" is the more symphonic track of the album. The orchestrations are the incentive that gives to the song a great Majesty.

In conclusion, Gloomy Grim are back and better than ever and not leave indifferent any follower of the band or any fan of Black Metal. “The Age Of Aquarius” is a essential disc.
