Crítica: Darkend – The Canticle of Shadows (2016)

Desde Italia nos llega Arte Ritual Extremo en forma de un huracán sónico. “The Canticle of Shadows” es el tercer larga duración de DARKEND, lanzado el 25 de abril de 2016. Es un paso más hacia el abismo que busca la banda con su performance, liturgias obscuras recitadas en latín, atmosferas extremas que me recuerdan los mejores años de CRADLE OF FILTH. Demostración de fuerza e intensidad que solo será aplacada por cantos gregorianos, interludios de piano y guitarras limpias.

Desde el inicio de esta obra, con el tema “Clavicula Salomonis”, el golpe de un tambor ancestral envuelto en una atmósfera ceremonial inicia el ritual, dando paso a unas pocas pinceladas de un paranoico piano, que denota tensión en el ambiente. Enseguida se desata un implacable ataque sonoro que será la seña de identidad hasta el final de esta gran obra.

En el segundo acto, “On The Defunct”, tras 4 notas de piano, se abre una puerta que nos deja a merced de un coro de cantos gregorianos que discurrirán de fondo a la lacerante voz cantante. Este track cuenta con un tétrico piano que suena en solitario a mitad del tema.

El tercer corte, “A Precipice Towards Abyssal Caves“, lo considero una obra maestra con 35 segundos de una intensa intro a doble bombo. Se detiene un instante a soltar unas pinceladas de tristeza, para retomar la brutalidad inicial, hasta que en el minuto 3:51 se abre un vórtice hacia otra dimensión, hacia un universo paralelo, algo que si me lo cuentan no creo imaginable: irrumpe un saxofón para iniciar un corto interludio arriesgado, innecesario bajo mi punto de vista. Rompe todo el encanto dentro de la obscuridad establecida; puede ser que mentalmente no esté preparado para romper ciertos esquemas.

En “Il Velo Dele Ombre” regresan las desgarradoras voces de dos entes que protagonizan este cuarto acto, entre un juez y un condenado, marcado por las atmósferas obscuras.

En “Sealed In Black Moon and Saturn”, el sexto acto, arranca con un intrigante piano; baterías marcando velocidad de vértigo; un piano que mastica una trágica atmósfera en un tiempo más lento. Una carcajada marca el cambio el paso a un corto descanso, en el minuto 4:20. El 5:03 nos lanza al épico final, y dejarnos adentrar en el séptimo y último acto.

El corte final, “Congressus Cum Daemona”, cuenta con la colaboración especial de Sakis Tolis de ROTTING CHRIST.

DARKEND es una exposición de arte visual y musical extremo que mezcla coros ceremoniales, sinfonías arcanas, ambientes obscuros con riffs impregnados de Black Metal. En el escenario, una mezcla incomparable de ritos ceremoniales acompañados de lápidas. Aroma de incienso, cráneos, velas y ramas muertas completan al detalle una escena de confusión espiritual, desolación y horror.

“The Canticle of the Shadows” cuenta con la colaboración de grandes nombres de la escena tales como:

From Italy arrives us Ritual Art Extreme like a sonic hurricane. “The Canticle of Shadows" is the third LP of DARKEND that will be released on 25^th April 2016. It’s another step to the abysm that searches the band with their performance: dark liturgies recited in Latin and extreme atmospheres that reminds me to the best years of CRADLE OF FILTH. Demonstration of power and intensity that only will be appeased with Gregorian voices, interludes of piano and acoustic guitars.

From the start of this album, with the track “Clavicula Salomonis”, a blow of an ancestral drum involved in a ceremonial atmosphere that starts the ritual, giving way to some brush strokes of a paranoiac piano that denotes tension in the ambient. Immediately breaks out a relentless noisy attack that will be the hallmark until the end of the track.

In the second track, “On The Defunct”, after 4 piano notes, it opens a door that leaves us to mercy of a chorus of Gregorian vocals that shall run background to the wounding voice of the vocalist.

The third song, “A Precipice Towards Abyssal Caves”, I consider it a masterpiece with 35 seconds of an intense intro to double kick. It stops an instant to leave some brush strokes of sadness, to come back to the initial brutality, until the minute 3:51 that opens to a vortex to another dimension, to a parallel universe, something if I hear it I think unimaginable: breaks a saxophone for start to a short and risked interlude, unnecessary under my point of view. Crushes with all the charm inside the established darkness; it could be that mentally I’m not prepared for break certain schemes.

In “Il Velo Dele Ombre” return to the heartrending voices of two authorities that stars this fourth song, between a judge and a condemned, marked by the dark atmospheres.

In “Sealed In Black Moon and Saturn”, the sixth act, starts with an intriguing piano; batteries marking vertiginous speed; a piano that sounds in a tragic atmosphere in a slow time. A laugh marks the change to a short break, in the minute 4:20. The 5:03 throws us to an epic end and get into the seventh and last act.

In the final track, “Congressus Cum Daemona”, counts with an special collaboration with Sakis Tolis of ROTTING CHRIST.

DARKEND is an exposition of visual and musical extreme art that mixes ceremonial chorus, hidden symphonies, dark ambient with impregnated riffs of black metal. In the stage, an incomparable mixture of ceremonial rites accompanied of headstones. Aroma of incense, skulls, candles and deadwood complete to the detail an scene of spiritual, desolation and horror confusion.

“The Canticle of the Shadows” counts with the collaboration of great names of the scene such like:
